Thermal cure in Luchon: the full guide (and where to stay)

The conventioned thermal cure in Luchon lasts 18 days and requires a doctor's prescription. Here's what you need to know — and how to find good accommodation a stone's throw from the spa.

In brief: Luchon is a recognised spa town for its sulphurous waters, with a dual focus on rheumatology and respiratory conditions. The conventioned cure lasts 18 days and requires a medical prescription, and the town is home to the only natural steam bath in Europe, the vaporarium.

What is the Luchon thermal cure?

The Thermes de Luchon use hypothermal sulphurous waters with recognised benefits. The recently renovated facility offers 18-day conventioned cures, mini-cures and wellness stays. Its speciality: the vaporarium, a natural steam bath unique in Europe, with galleries carved into the rock fed by sulphurous vapours at 38-42°C.

What are the treatment indications?

  • Rheumatology: arthritis, joint pain, after-effects of injuries.
  • Respiratory conditions: sinusitis, chronic bronchitis, asthma — the vaporarium is particularly suited to clearing and soothing the airways.

Duration, prescription and reimbursement

The conventioned cure runs over 18 days of treatment, prescribed by your doctor and covered by French health insurance (the rate and terms depend on your situation; accommodation and travel may also be subsidised depending on income). You'll therefore need accommodation for about three weeks — hence the importance of choosing well.
